THE BLACKWATER ENSEMBLE’S
Rebuilding the Future Like There’s No Tomorrow:
Smarty-Pants Sketch Comedy for a New Day

PERFORMANCES BEGIN FRIDAY, AUGUST 27TH, 2004 AT 8:00PM

Sketch comedy group The Blackwater Ensemble is proud to present Rebuilding the Future Like There’s No Tomorrow for two weekends starting August 27th in the black box theater at 34 Elton Street. Tickets cost $5 and are available at the door. The show starts at 8 PM.

Rebuilding the Future Like There’s No Tomorrow is a sketch comedy show with music (provided by blues-harpist extraordinaire Rob Cullivan) in the tradition of The Kids in the Hall or Saturday Night Live, but with a stronger emphasis on being good rather than getting easy laughs. With a roots in literature and theater, rather than stand-up, the show feels more like a series of short comic plays. That’s why it’s called smarty-pants sketch comedy. This show includes brand new pieces as well as some old favorites that fans of the group will remember like The Rocco Bamdesi School of Acting Technique and the French existentialist vaudevillian routine called “Nobody.” Rumor has it that Mickey the Wonder Pimp may drop by for a rare public appearance.

Originally formed in 1988, The Blackwater Ensemble has performed in many places in Rochester, including a standing run at the much-missed Jazzberry’s, and as far-flung as The Rivoli in Toronto, SUNY Geneseo, and an out-of-the-way bar beyond the last exit in Brooklyn, NY. They twice-performed with the Vacant Lot, a Canadian sketch comedy troupe who had television shows on the CBC and Comedy Central, appeared on the Brother Wease Morning Circus, WOKR13’s afternoon news and WXXI 1370 AM. It’s all true. They have the press clippings to show for it.

The Blackwater Ensemble is made up of Liz Cameron, Tom Clifford, Brent Cox, and Steve Engel. In the intervening years between performances, Cameron has become a medical transcriptionist, Clifford works in a library, Cox is a paralegal and Engel an English and theater teacher at Brighton High School. Never straying far from live performance, they are excited to return to the Rochester stage and hope that they can “make at least as much money as the Eagles.”

PERFORMANCE DATES: August 27th, August 28th, September 3rd and 4h. All shows are at 8 PM.

Tickets are $5.00 General Admission.
